Land of KAMUY - Soil and Soul
The dance piece “Soil and Soul’ is part of the performance “Land of Kamuy” which is based on the myth of the Ainu tribe, the indigenous people of Hokkaido, Japan. Their profound respect for “Kamuy”, the spiritual god of nature, I discovered the sanctity and beauty in their rustic living. This performance represents their faith, ritual, and devotion to Kamuy. Expressing their sacredness through the performance based on the folklore of Kamuy, collaboration with the Butoh movements, traditional dance and storytelling, poetry unifies film and animation. Also this project is the message from the Kamuy, to protest against environmental destruction.

The Ainu tribe, the indigenous people of my homeland Hokkaido. Spending decades of learning their history and culture, especially their profound respect for “Kamuy”, the spiritual god of nature, I discovered the sanctity and beauty in their rustic living. I became passionate about expressing their sacredness through my performance. Based on the folklore of Kamuy, I create my dance performance in collaboration with the moving images of my homeland. Creating and presenting this performance is not only my artistic mission but also the healing process for the history of ignorance and persecution toward the Ainu people. At the same time, this project is the message from the god of nature, Kamui, to protest against environmental destruction, and I express the prayer through my very language, dance.
