Land of KAMUY

The performance “Land of KAMUY” is based on the world views of the Ainu people: their faith, ritual, and devotion to Kamuy, the gods of nature, through Butoh, contemporary dance and storytelling. It is a collaboration of film, animation, poetry, storytelling and dance together with traditional and Butoh costume and musical installment. “Kamuy”, the spiritual god of nature, I discovered the sanctity and beauty in their rustic living. This performance represents their faith, ritual, and devotion to Kamuy. Expressing their sacredness through the performance based on the folklore of Kamuy. Most importantly this project is the message from the Kamuy, to protest against environmental destruction.

The Ainu are indigenous to Hokkaido, a large island in northern Japan. They respect, bless, and live in harmony with Kamuy, the gods of nature, and are recognized as an ethnic minority that embraces unique culture and performing arts. Creating this performance, which introduces the sanctity and beauty of the Ainu culture to many audiences, I explore a spirituality based on a sustainable relation to nature, so different from the dominant western religious traditions. This performance, the voice of Kamuy presents the daily devotion to the environment and represents a prayer for environmental preservation. This performance inspired by the Ainu cosmology and enhancing the visibility of their cultural and historical significance is my mission as a Japanese artist. is not only my personal atonement for being ignorant about the people of my homeland, but also a way to heal the collective memory of discrimination and violence against the Ainu people. I believe in the significance of my being an artist in expressing the voice of the Ainu through my language, dance.
